Bamboo is the Swiss army knife of our range, for a number of reasons.

First of all it works equally well indoors or out, both in terms of style and weather resistance. It looks good as an individual plant, or put together as a long run.

We can also make it in any height from around 60cm to around 15 metres tall, which is truly humungous. Another advantage is that it doesn’t get a ridiculously wide canopy as it gets taller, so it’s great for lightwells and those tall-but-narrow glazed areas that run from basement to roof.

Is there no end to its qualities, we hear you ask? Well, it makes a really nice shallow privacy screen on glazed balconies but still lets light through, and finally the fact that there are lots of little leaves means that it casts really pretty shadows when lit well.

Ok, just showing off! Here’s a mix of the usual roof terrace suspects, olives, rosemary, marram grass – plus three really chunky groups of bamboo, double density to work as a wind break. 570

Another terrace, this time the restaurant on the 5th floor at Harrods. The bamboo are only 90cm tall and are actually between two sheets of safety glass. We had to slide them in from one end, like diabolical Lego! There’s marram grass in-between the troughs, as well. 571

A stylish balcony run of individual bamboo in tapered planters, the idea being to break the view without losing too much light. You can see out but they can’t see in. Whoever ‘they’ may be… 572

Ok, here come the giant ones! Vodafone HQ, they’re 11m tall and the brief was that people would look out at greenery from all the floors. They came in to the building horizontally and it took eight of us to get them upright! As an idea of scale, there’s a person on the sofa lower right, and that’s part of a Formula One car… 573

A more human scale for this one – these are our narrow (only 18cm deep) planters on a glazed balcony with lightly planted 1m fine leaf bamboo – so you lose the minimum of floor space. Again, easy to see out - but plenty of privacy if you wanted to wear a kilt. 574

Back to showing off! Paddington Basin, I think, and it must have been a 40m run. We spent a long time playing with the heights of the trunks and the density so it looked like it was doing better in some places than others. The bloke on the right seems to prefer a chair to the bean-bags, though. 575

Like terracotta, we don’t see enough nice baskets. These were quite a size, maybe 60cm across and the ceiling was 2.8m, so we made them look lush and full. The place wasn’t finished when we installed, so one would hope there’s a mural or mirror on that large blank wall now! 576

Very arty angle! This is in the West End, with one of those dismal views out of the back that you so often get there. These are custom made narrow planters, and the bamboo goes to over 2m. The picture’s wonky because we left the wide-angle lens at the office… 577

Nice idea for a modern under-street lightwell, textured walls and a long trough with bamboo at each of the short sides. They’re 60cm tiles, so the planter is around a metre long and the overall height close to 2.8m. We do quite a few of these. 579
